Drinking tea is an English tradition that has been rooted in its culture for a few centuries, but this custom arose because of a Portuguese woman - the Duchess Catarina de Bragança who married the then King of England Charles II. When Catherine arrived in England, she realized that tea was consumed only as a medicine and was very expensive. As you had a lot of tea leaves in your suitcase, you can continue to drink tea regularly.
Today the British are famous for their 5 o'clock tea and it's impossible not to imagine an Englishman without a cup of tea with milk... served, at the moment, from a small milk jug.
